What to Wear for Your Maternity Session: Style Tips from a Photographer Who’s Been There!
You’re glowing (even if you don’t feel like it), and this season of life is too beautiful not to document. But once you’ve booked your maternity session, the biggest question is always: “What on earth should I wear?”
As a maternity photographer who’s styled countless mamas and walked many through this process, I’ve got you. Whether you want dreamy, romantic photos or a casual in-home vibe, here are my top tips to help you feel confident and beautiful during your maternity session.
1// Comfort is Queen (But That Doesn’t Mean Boring)
Soft, stretchy fabrics work best.
Make sure you can move easily — sitting, walking, lifting your arms, etc.
Embrace your bump — avoid anything that cuts into your body or feels restrictive.
2// Maxi Dresses Are Your Best Friend!
Flowy dresses photograph so beautifully.
They add movement, drama, and a touch of elegance.
Bonus: they’re flattering on every body type and perfect for outdoor or sunset session
3// Stick to Neutrals, Earth Tones, or Soft Pastels
These colors photograph well and won’t distract from your face or your bump.
Avoid harsh patterns, logos, or anything too loud.
Think ivory, blush, rust, sage, soft blue, terracotta — especially if you’re shooting in natural light.
4// Coordinate, Don’t Match (If You’re Including a Partner or Kids)
You want the whole family to look cohesive without being too “matchy-matchy.”
Pick 2–3 complementary tones and build outfits around them.
Lay all the outfits out together beforehand to see how they look side-by-side.
5// Consider the Season & Location.
Beach? Barefoot with a flowy linen dress., Outback Australia? A warm-toned sweater dress and ankle boots, In-home lifestyle? Cozy loungewear or a robe can be just as stunning, Bushland? Earthy tones with a fitted dress.
6// Undergarments Matter
Seamless underwear is a must — especially for tight dresses.
Nude tones are best to avoid showing through sheer fabrics.
If you're wearing off-shoulder or strapless, plan your bra accordingly.
7// Don’t Forget About Hair, Makeup & Accessories
Natural makeup + a loose wave or braid = timeless.
Hats, delicate jewelry, or a floral crown can add a lovely finishing touch.
Keep it simple and true to your style.
The goal of your maternity session is to celebrate this season — your changing body, your growing family, your unique story. Choose something that feels like you, and the confidence will shine through every image.
